How to Choose the Right Bra: Comfort, Fit and Support

For most women, bras are a necessary evil. Bras can be uncomfortable and even unsafe for breast health. It’s important when choosing a bra, to consider several aspects for proper fit, comfort and support. Here are bra features to consider.

Proper sizing: Bra cup size is arranged by letter. The number on a bra size indicates the measurement in inches around the back and widest part of the breasts. A properly sized bra should support your breasts by putting even weight on shoulders and back. Choose a large enough cup size so that your breasts are not squashed, pinched or pressed inward.

Hook placement: Choose a bra that fits comfortably on the last set of hooks. As you wash and wear your bra, it will loose elasticity. The extra sets of inner hooks are meant to be used to take up slack as your bra looses some of its shape.

Number of hooks on bra clasp: Bra hooks range from a single hook to vertical rows of three and four hooks. Larger women with large breasts usually find bras with three or four hook clasps more comfortable. Bra clasps with extra hooks help support the breasts comfortably. Bras with single and double hook clasps tend to pinch and create what is called ‘back fat’ or skin bulges.

Straps: Choose a bra that fits comfortable with the ring strap adjuster extended toward the end. As the bra stretches and looses elasticity, the strap ring adjuster helps to take up strap slack.

Underwire? Many large breasted women feel the need for an underwire for support. Bras with underwires are not as healthy or safe for breast health as bras that rely on firm elastic for support. To avoid wearing a bra with underwire and still have firm support, choose a bra with more hooks in the back and wide, sturdy elastic straps. Allow the bra to do the work of supporting your breasts. Choose a bra with a foam support pad rather than an underwire for added support.

Fabric and details: Check bra construction for any raw edges that will chafe. Often bra straps hide deceptively rough. Rub the bra strap edge along the inside of your wrist, to see if it chafes your skin. Lace and decorations on bras can also be very itchy, also. Choose soft Lycra and Tricot fabrics for a comfortable bra.
